Today, we raise a Mai Tai to the man who started it all—Victor Bergeron, known to most as Trader Vic.

Born in San Francisco on December 10, 1902, Vic was more than a restaurateur—he was a visionary. With a wooden leg, a wild imagination, and an unmatched passion for food, drink, and global culture.

From Oakland to the World

In 1934, Vic transformed a small bar in Oakland—once called Hinky Dinks—into the very first Trader Vic’s. What started as a quirky gathering spot filled with South Pacific flair became an international hospitality icon.

By blending globally inspired cuisine with island-style décor and a new genre of tropical cocktails, Trader Vic introduced a fresh sense of fun and adventure to the restaurant scene. And yes—he also invented the Mai Tai in 1944. That’s not up for debate.

The Legacy Lives On

Trader Vic’s restaurants have since spanned the globe—from California to Munich, Tokyo to Dubai—bringing island hospitality to every corner of the map. But at the heart of it all is Vic’s original vision:
Good food. Strong drinks. A place to escape.

To this day, we’re proud to carry on his legacy in every flame-grilled dish, every handcrafted cocktail, and every guest we welcome through our doors.

Celebrate With Us

This December 10th, join us in celebrating the birthday of the original Trader. Come in, sip a Mai Tai, and toast to the man who brought a taste of the tropics to the world.

Cheers to you, Vic. We wouldn’t be here without you.
