When people think of a Mai Tai, they often imagine tropical sunsets and Hawaiian beaches—but did you know this world-famous cocktail was actually born in Oakland, California?

As we gear up to celebrate Mai Tai Day on August 30th, let’s shake up some trivia and toast to the iconic cocktail that put Trader Vic’s on the map!

Mai Tai Origins: Straight Out of Oakland

Far from the sandy shores of Hawaii, the original Mai Tai was created in Oakland, California, at Trader Vic’s location on 6500 San Pablo Avenue & 65th Street. In the early 1940s, Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron crafted this legendary drink to highlight the rich, smooth flavors of fine rum, paired with fresh lime juice, orange curaçao, and Trader Vic’s signature rock candy syrup.

One sip, and a friend reportedly exclaimed, “Mai Tai—Roa Ae!” Tahitian for Out of this world—the best!” And just like that, the Mai Tai was born.

Mai Tais Take to the Skies

The Mai Tai’s fame didn’t stay grounded for long. In the 1970s, United Airlines offered passengers flying from the mainland to Honolulu a unique inflight experience called Trader Vic’s Adventures in Dining.

Travelers could choose between a standard meal or indulge in a special menu featuring Trader Vic’s pupus, curries, and of course—a perfectly crafted Mai Tai. Talk about taking tiki to new heights!

Oakland’s Official Cocktail

The Mai Tai remains a point of pride for its city of origin. In 2009, the city of Oakland made it official, proclaiming August 30th as Mai Tai Day, honoring the cocktail’s local roots and global impact.

So the next time someone tells you the Mai Tai is a Hawaiian invention, you’ll know the real story—and have a perfect reason to raise a glass.
