Every September 19th, it’s time to drop anchor, raise your glass, and let your inner pirate shine—it’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
What started as a joke between two friends in Albany, Oregon in 1995 has grown into a full-fledged parodic holiday celebrated around the world. Created by John Baur and Mark Summers, this unofficial holiday encourages everyone to ditch the desk talk and go full swashbuckler for a day.
A Tiki Toast to the High Seas
At Trader Vic’s, we may be known for our island hospitality, but we’re not above a little pirate mischief—especially when it involves rum barrels, fog cutters, and drinks with a name you need to yell across a ship.
So whether you’re a buccaneer of the bar, a tropical treasure hunter, or just here for the rum, here’s how to get in the spirit:
Say this, not that:
-
“Where’s my drink, matey?” → instead of “Can I see the cocktail menu?”
-
“Yo-ho-ho and a barrel of Mai Tais!” → instead of “I’ll have the usual.”
-
“Avast ye, barkeep!” → instead of “Excuse me, bartender.”
Bonus points for pirate hats, parrots, and eye patches (but not required).
What to Order on Pirate Day
If you're sailing into Trader Vic’s on September 19th, we suggest a few proper drinks for the occasion:
-
Trader Vic’s Rum Barrel – Because pirates didn’t sip from stemware
-
Samoan Fog Cutter – For when you need a drink with a bit of mystery
-
Tiki Puka Puka – Three rums, one mission: make you talk like a pirate
Did You Know?
Talk Like a Pirate Day has also been embraced by the Pastafarianism movement (yes, the one with the Flying Spaghetti Monster). So if you’re feeling a little saucy or absurd—this day is definitely for you.
🏴☠️ So on September 19th, trade your necktie for a bandana and your wine list for a rum map.
At Trader Vic’s, we’re not just celebrating—
we’re plundering the cocktail menu.
