May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time to recognize the people and stories that have shaped our communities—and our own history at Trader Vic’s.

Just beyond the Golden Gate sits Angel Island Immigrant Station, where thousands of Chinese immigrants were detained during the Chinese Exclusion Act.

In 1979, our founder, Victor Bergeron, commissioned a granite stele there to honor those who passed through. Many members of our team had family ties to Angel Island, and this tribute was a way to recognize their stories and contributions.

“Leaving their homes and villages, they crossed the ocean only to endure confinement in these barracks. Conquering frontiers and barriers, they pioneered a new life by the Golden Gate.”

Today, the site remains a place of reflection, where families continue to honor their ancestors.

At Trader Vic’s, our story has always been shaped by the people behind it. This month, we recognize the lasting impact of AAPI communities—past and present—and the role they continue to play in our kitchens, our bars, and our shared experience.

Inscription on the Stele:
